IN THIS LESSON
Instinct and Survival: A Realm Bound by Fear and Ignorance.
The animal realm is a place where beings live with instinct and survival at the forefront. In this realm, beings are driven by fear and desire, focused on basic needs like food, shelter, and safety. According to Buddhist psychology, this realm represents a state of ignorance and unawareness, where beings are trapped in habits and unable to see beyond their immediate concerns. It’s a life of vulnerability and limitation, lacking the wisdom to break free. The animal realm reminds us of the importance of developing awareness and compassion, rising above instinct to find true understanding and peace.

Jakarta Stories are Buddhist Fables with lots of animals.
In the past, the actions of a king caused great stress and harm to two herds of deer. The leaders of the two herds decided to take turns sending a sacrifice to the king to protect the greater good. It fell upon a pregnant doe to be sacrificed and she asked her leader for leniency. He refused her and ordered her to accept her fate. The Banyan King Deer decided to step in and save her. Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.
